Applications

Uses of I beam include construction, engineering, support frames and columns for trolley ways, lifts and hoists, trailer and truck bed framing, bridges, factory shops, warehouses, workplace platforms, heavy machinery and structural support applications.

Grades

Two of the most utilized grades of I beams are EN 10025 S275 and BS4360 Grade 43A. EN 10025 S275 is a popular mild steel grade suitable for various use in construction and structural applications. Having low carbon steel specifications, EN 10025 S275 provides great machinability and high weldability with moderate strength. Structural steel grade S275 is widely used in the construction, maintenance and industrial industries.

Mild steel grade BS4360 Grade 43A is another widely used carbon structural steels, which is suitable for a large number of construction projects. It is cheaper than most other structural steel grades, which makes it suitable for different applications such as building and machinery constructions that do not require wear-resistance and high strength.

Types of Beams

Parallel Flange I Sections (IPE) – European standard I-beams with parallel flanges, lighter in weight compared to HE beams, and commonly used in construction and structural applications.

Wide Flange Beams (HE) – Also known as HE beams, these have wider flanges than IPE beams, providing better load distribution and structural stability, commonly used in heavy-duty construction. Available in HEA and HEB profiles.

Universal Beams (UB) – A British and Australian standard beam with an “I” shape, designed for high bending strength, used in buildings, bridges, and other structures.

Universal Columns (UC) – Similar to UB but with nearly equal width and depth, making them ideal for columns due to their high load-bearing capacity.

Metric Beams (MB) – Beams designed according to metric dimensions, typically used in countries following metric standards for structural applications.

Metric Columns (MC) – Similar to MB but designed for vertical load-bearing applications, commonly used in building frameworks.
