Galvanised Flat Bars

Galvanised Flat Bars

Information

Galvanised flat bar is a low carbon steel bar that has been hot dip galvanised in a zinc coating which protects the hot rolled mild steel. Galvanised flat bars have greater resistance to corrosion, compared to mild steel due to the protective layer of zinc. Galvanised flat bar is therefore ideal for outdoor use as it can stand up to the elements, giving it a longer life expectancy. Galvanised flat bars have good weldability and are generally used for fabrication, frameworks and structural applications.

Applications

Uses of galvanised flat bar include construction, transportation, structural applications, manufacturing, industrial, food industries, general fabrication, engineering, petroleum, machining and repairs, shipbuilding, chemical plant, transmission line towers and support frames.

Grades

Two of the common mild steel grades used for galvanised flat bars are EN10025 S275 and EN10025 S355. EN10025 S275 is a popular mild steel grade utilized in various general engineering and construction applications. As a low carbon steel specifications, EN10025 S275 provides adequate strength with excellent machinability and is ideal for welding. Supplied as a hot rolled non alloy steel, mild steel grade S275 is used widely in the structural, maintenance and manufacturing industries as it has good weldability and machinability.

Mild steel grade EN10025 S355 is also widely used galvanised flat bars, which is has medium tensile strength and is readily weldable. Grade EN10025 S355 is offered in hot rolled, as well as cold drawn condition. For a low carbon steel that offers high yield strength and is highly durable, mild steel grade EN10025 S355 is often used in the most demanding environments that are susceptible to frequent weather fluctuations, such as on offshore structural sites.

Types

There are two predominant types of galvanised flat bars, hot-dip galvanising and electrogalvanising. For hot-dip galvanising, the steel surface is dipped in molten pure zinc. For zinc plating or electrogalvanising, a thin coating of zinc is applied on a steel surface using an electric current. Electrogalvanising produces a thinner less resilient surface and mostly recommended for interior use.

TypesDescription
Hot-Dip GalvanisingApplication of a zinc coating by dipping steel in a molten pool of zinc. Alloy layers such as zinc oxide and zinc carbonate, are formed on the primary metal through reaction with the surrounding atmosphere to form a protect coating.
ElectrogalvanisingAn electrolyte solution is passed through an electric current, which is later applied to the steel. The electric current reduces positively charged zinc ions to zinc metal, which is then deposited on the positively charged steel.
Pre-GalvanisingRolling steel metal through a cleaning agent to quickly prime material for galvanising. The metal is passed through a pool of molten liquid zinc and is instantly recoiled.
Cold GalvanisingApplication of zinc-rich paint to the surface of steel metal to protect it from corrosion.
